Mentorship Opportunity with Okpe ThankGod Damion


My name is Okpe ThankGod Damion, I am known as a Statistician, Data Analyst, M&E Specialist, Teacher & Mentor, Business Development Specialist, Product Manager, Scrum Master etc. I am availing myself for mentorship opportunities to anyone interested in having a mentor with whom he/she can reach out to and discuss issues related to career development and capacity building. Specifically, more to data analyst, statisticians and those interested in working with NOG (NGOs & INGOS) as data analyst, data officer, M&E Officers especially beginners. 

This mentorship covers beginner to advance data analysis with practical experience I will be sharing with you, Someone that would listen to your challenges because I have been through similar situation and can understand the frustration of know knowing if you are doing the right thing or not, a rare opportunity that many are looking for today to move to the next stage of their career. 

I needed to do this because of the challenges I had previously while starting out as a statistician. I had always wanted someone that would hold me by the hands and guide me, support me, be there for me when I have any question or need guidance, show me practical experience of all the theoretical experience I had in school, redo some of the things am working on and give me the opportunity to do them myself and continue to practice, share his or her personal stories and experiences with me how he overcome some of the many challenges while trying to answer questions and solve business problems, but as you can imagine, I do not have such person as at then. I do not have such an opportunity am sharing with you today. 

I was actively searching all the time but unable to get someone that would devote time to teach and guide me. Even if its for 1 hour per week or to share update on WhatsApp and get feedback. It was challenging because I had to keep researching everything I need to know and how I can do it. Even a basic issues as how standard deviation is used to answer business problem, or as basic as what percentages mean to an organisation, how organisation manage data practically, I struggle to get practical experience or knowledge on the aspect of data management. This is one of the very reasons I decide to make myself available for a mentorship session opportunity with students. Its surprising that till this moment I still have some of my student from my undergraduate days who reported missing the opportunity I presented to many of them early when I was the departmental president in my school. (Statistics Department, Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa State). 

While I admire the passion most of us have learning theoretically, its important to have some practical experience and I can tell you for a fact that most of the things you will be doing for many business today are not the complex computations you are imagining and desire to do with data. They just want answer to business questions and they need accurate, relevant and timely information from you. 

For me today, this is an opportunity to grow in different aspect of my career while networking with you and others from different fields and organization. It’s a fun activity for me looking at different perspective, providing recommendations and solutions that could change the way data analyst do things in different industries. In my line of work today as an M&E Specialist, I am continually in search of data analyst to collaborate on different projects and it would be a good opportunity to share the different opportunities available to you as a data analyst, M&E Officer, Data Consultant, Research, Business Intelligent Specialist, Feedback and Accountability Manager, Knowledge Management Officer and anyone working with or interested in data.
